Congressman Blum Earns Award from Seniors for Stance on Tax Reform

“Congressman Blum understands the time has come for bi-partisan tax reform that will allow seniors to keep more of the money they’ve earned”

(Cedar Rapids, Iowa) – The non-partisan 60 Plus Association, representing more than 7.2 million seniors nationally, including more than 113,000 in Iowa, today presented its Guardian of Seniors Rights award to 1st district Iowa Congressman Rod Blum (R) for his strong support of America’s seniors, including his stance as a vocal leader on the need for tax reform to create jobs and stimulate the economy.

With nearly 30 million U.S. seniors on fixed-incomes and struggling day-to-day to make ends meet, economic growth remains a top concern for older Americans and their families.

Said 60 Plus VP for Communications Gerard Scimeca, on hand at a local senior center to present the award, “In his short time in office, Congressman Blum has distinguished himself as a strong and trusted advocate on behalf of America’s seniors, prioritizing their concerns and standing firmly in their corner.

“With our government borrowing trillions to pay its bills while taking in record revenue in taxes, Congressman Blum understands the time has come for bi-partisan tax reform that will allow Americans to keep more of the money they’ve earned, which will also spur economic growth that is so critical to seniors’ quality of life and standard of living.

“There are many challenges facing seniors today, and the challenge of economic uncertainty caused by our out-of-date tax policies grows more daunting each day. Our seniors have worked hard to create and preserve the America we know, and we have a responsibility to pass on a nation full of opportunities to the generations ahead. We urge representatives from both sides of the aisle to join Congressman Blum in working to achieve tax reform this coming year.”

Continued Scimeca, “Our nation’s tax code has not seen a substantial overhaul in nearly 30 years, and to some, substantive tax reform and all of the benefits that would surely follow seem like a far-off dream. But with committed leaders like Congressman Blum, there is reason to believe that meaningful tax reform is within reach in 2016. On behalf of our more than 27,000 supporters in Iowa’s 1st congressional district, 60 Plus is honored to recognize policymakers like Congressman Blum, who have diligently promoted comprehensive  tax reform to strengthen the economy, create more jobs, and reduce the tax burden on Iowa seniors and working Americans across the nation.”
