(Tallahassee, FL) – The 60 Plus Association is proud to announce its participation in today’s ‘2011 Ambassadors for Aging Day’ at the Florida Capitol Courtyard in Tallahassee. Hosted by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Florida Sports Foundation, the day’s events were a showcase to highlight the activities and contributions of senior citizens, their caregivers, and senior citizens activists from across the state.
“We’re here on behalf of over 750,000 of our supporters in the state of Florida to remind legislators that seniors make up not only a substantial portion of their constituency, but are also consumers of today’s technology,” said 60 Plus National Coalitions Director Matthew Kandrach.
Said 60 Plus President Amy Frederick, “Online activities and cutting-edge technology play an increasingly vital role in the lives of today’s senior citizens. The stereotype of older Americans who can’t fix the blinking clock on their VCR is long gone.
“Today’s seniors are using broadband and cellular technology like never before. They are extremely savvy and require today’s technology to communicate, to stay informed, and even to make their voices heard to their elected representatives.
“Technology is an extremely important player in the life and well-being of today’s older Americans. We thank the state of Florida for the opportunity to advocate on their behalf on this and many other critical areas.”
Several organizations attended the Ambassadors for Aging Day sporting ‘iSeniors’ t-shirts and lapel stickers to highlight the importance of broadband access among the elder community. Associations included Citizens for a Digital Future (CDF), Latinos in Information Sciences and Technology Association (LISTA), the Ministerial Alliance Against the Digital Divide (MAADD), and The National Caucus and Center on Black Aged, Inc., (NCBA).
