Seniors Celebrate Retirement of Earnings Test
Today is a “Super Friendly Day” for Seniors
Statement by 60 Plus President Jim Martin

Washington, D.C. — — Hailing the vote to repeal the 33% depression-era tax imposed on seniors as a “super friendly day for seniors,” 60 Plus Association President Jim Martin said, “This is as super friendly as it gets. 60 Plus has long sought repeal of this antiquated tax on seniors in the 65-69 age group. Repeal is a significant step toward fulfilling the 60 Plus slogan, “Tax Fairness for Seniors”.

“This tax was imposed in the 1930’s when unemployment was at 25% to create job openings for younger workers. It takes away $1 out of every $3 in benefits on workers making over $17,000. This penalty hurts most of those seniors who have to continue working to make ends meet.

“Seniors all across the country especially commend Senators John Ashcroft (R-MO), Rod Grams (R-MN), Spencer Abraham (R-MI), Rick Santorum (R-PA), Slade Gorton (R-WA) and Conrad Burns (R-MT) for their leadership in seeing that this unfair tax is retired in this session of Congress.” Martin also praised House Members for their leadership on this issue including Congressmen Clay Shaw (R-FL), Sam Johnson (R-TX) and Collin Peterson (D-MN).

“During depression times and 25% unemployment, perhaps the limit made sense, but it makes no sense now, with 4% unemployment and jobs going begging with seniors eager to fill them.

“It has been noted that this tax has outlived its time, it’s bad policy and should be repealed. 60 Plus couldn’t agree more.”
