1984 Mondale Redux Lost on Democrats Suffering From “Political Amnesia”

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (March 9, 2018) – 60 Plus Association Founder and Chairman James Martin Friday issued the following statement in response to a Senate Democrat plan to raise taxes by $1 trillion including a doubling of the estate tax:

“Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer must really like his current title – Minority Leader. He and his fellow tax-and-spend Democrats in the Senate are at it again, this time promising to double the Death Tax as part of a one trillion dollar tax increase on the American people.

“This has got to be one of the dumbest election year ploys in the history of election year ploys.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, Congress approved an historic tax cut that included doubling the exemption in the Death Tax, providing enormous help to America’s struggling family farmers, ranchers and small business owners who have to sell equipment or other assets just to pay the tax. These people cannot afford to pay lawyers to put together trusts and foundations designed to evade the Death Tax and they need the relief President Trump has delivered.

“Now, Chuck Schumer is promising to destroy this just as the positive effects of this tax cut are taking place.

“But political amnesia has put Senator Schumer and the rest of his congressional Democrats in the unenviable position that Walter Mondale created for himself in 1984. After promising to raise taxes, Mondale’s campaign went down in flames with 49 states voting to reelect Ronald Reagan in one of the biggest landslides in history,” Martin concluded.
