60 Plus Association Leads Conservative Coalition Supporting Trump Administration’s Effort to End Medicare Double Payments

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 60 Plus Association, the nation’s leading conservative seniors advocacy organization, is spearheading a coalition of 16 conservative and free-market organizations urging Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz to eliminate duplicative Medicare payments that unnecessarily burden taxpayers and America’s seniors.

As reported today by The Daily Signal, the coalition supports a proposed CMS rule addressing overlapping physician services billed during the same patient visit. The reform would reduce unnecessary Medicare spending while potentially lowering out-of-pocket costs for millions of seniors.

“President Trump and Dr. Oz deserve credit for taking on a problem that Washington has allowed to persist for far too long,” said Saul Anuzis, President of the 60 Plus Association. “Medicare should pay for quality care, not pay twice for the same work. This is exactly the kind of commonsense reform that protects taxpayers, strengthens Medicare, and puts seniors first. Our coalition is proud to stand behind an administration willing to challenge wasteful spending and demand accountability.”

The proposed rule would pay the highest-priced applicable physician service at 100% while reducing payment for additional applicable services performed during the same encounter to 50%. Federal audits have previously identified tens of millions of dollars in improper payments involving same-day office visits and procedures.

“For seniors living on fixed incomes, every dollar matters,” said Jim Martin, Founder and Chairman of the 60 Plus Association. “When Medicare pays twice for overlapping services, seniors can end up paying more through coinsurance. That is simply unacceptable. Our members have spent their working lives paying into Medicare, and they deserve a system that protects their hard-earned dollars. We applaud Dr. Oz for tackling this problem and urge CMS to finalize this important reform.”

The 60 Plus Association and its coalition partners believe eliminating unnecessary payments is an important step toward preserving Medicare’s financial sustainability without compromising access to medically necessary care.
