Democrats Dismiss Our Constitutional Traditions as ‘Nostalgia’
It appears that the Madisonian democracy has joined shackets and combat boots as embarrassingly outdated for many on the left. In calling for radical changes to our constitutional system, leading Democrats are now calling the lingering loyalty to our traditions as mere “nostalgia.” To be nostalgic in today’s parlance is to be a dupe of the oligarchs and an enemy to reform.
“Nostalgia” has become the new coded term for reactionaries among Democratic figures, who are trying to convince Americans to accept radical changes to our republic after 250 years.
Kamala Harris recently insisted that opposition to ideas like packing the Supreme Court is mere “nostalgia” for a system that is no longer working. “I would caution us against talking about rebuilding with any sense of nostalgia about how things work, because even before, they weren’t working so well for a lot of folks,” she said. That “nostalgia,” according to Harris, is preventing us from doing things like packing the Supreme Court with an instant liberal majority.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) last week also declared that “nostalgia is not working” and, while refusing to embrace socialism, added that “capitalism as we know it doesn’t work.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., warned Friday that the United States is engaged in a “battle” against Marxism, arguing the ideology is gaining traction as Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates notch a string of high-profile primary victories this midterm cycle.
Speaking at the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Summit in San Diego, Johnson framed the nation’s 250th anniversary as an opportunity to push back against what he described as growing socialist influence and renew appreciation for America’s founding principles.
“We are in a confrontation, in a battle against a very dark philosophy — Marxism, and its deviations, communism and socialism,” Johnson said. “You see, the problem that I tell university students is, this formula that Lincoln later articulated in the Gettysburg Address, we’re dedicated to this proposition that we are one nation under God, and that a government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

The newest update from Cook Political Report is here, and it shows a clear pathway to victory for Republicans to maintain control of the House of Representatives as we head into the November midterm election season.
The July 16 report shows that Republicans are likely to come away with 212 seats, and have classified a further 18 as “tossups.” 14 of those tossup seats are either currently held by a Republican incumbent or are now open seats that were previously held by a Republican.
Both Democrats and Republicans are campaigning hard to control these seats, with some of the most heavily-watched House bouts appearing on the list. Notable races include Colorado’s 8th District held by Republican Gabe Evans, Wisconsin’s 3rd District held by Republican Derrick Van Orden, and Texas’ 34th District held by Democrat Vincente Gonzales.

Teachers’ unions have long enjoyed access to public payroll systems and facilities that no private entity receives. Recent legislation in three states demonstrates a better path: public funds are redirected toward improving student outcomes, not strengthening union infrastructure.
Idaho got the ball rolling on April 10, when Gov. Brad Little signed House Bill 516a. The law prohibits the use of public resources and facilities for union activities. Districts are now barred from collecting dues through payroll systems, hosting union meetings or trainings at school sites during work hours, or granting paid leave for political advocacy. The bill’s supporters argue that public resources should be directed toward educational functions rather than union operations.
Students need education, not indoctrination
The North American Values Institute recently reviewed a series of webinars about how to use public schools as an organizing hub to “free Palestine.” The webinars were hosted by Code Pink’s Marci Winograd, who leads the pro-Palestinian caucus within California Teachers Association.
One webinar featured dance teacher Laura Pinho, who has a social media history replete with antisemitic tropes such as characterizing Jews as “Satanic bankers,” explaining how to incorporate Palestinian “resistance” into dance lessons.
This was not simply a lesson about Palestinian culture. It was a tutorial in how to use state academic standards to steer students toward a predetermined political conclusion.
Blame Cronyism for Our Economic Woes, Not Free Markets
What is so startling about the rise of Democratic Socialism is not that young people are realizing that the economy is rigged against them. It absolutely is. What is concerning is the lack of an accurate assessment of how it is rigged. Young people who believe in the vision of Democratic Socialism will often say that the fault of their economic struggles is the “billionaire class,” and their ownership over such vast amounts of wealth relative to the rest of us. So, in order to repair this injustice, the government must insert itself into the economy and engage in redistributive measures to take from some (“the rich”) and give to others (“the workers”).
On a base level, what the Democratic Socialist is outlining here is a class analysis. In their narrative, there are the rich, who exploit their labor and garner large (and, in their view, undeserved) profits. Then, there are the workers, who can’t seem to get ahead due to their inherent struggle against their corporate overlords.
The Democratic Socialist has also decided on a cure for this situation: government intervention into the economy. They believe that in order to break up large corporations and strip wealth from the billionaire class, the government should step in and enact their version of justice. Concisely, they are advocating for the growth of government as a means to redistribute wealth. This gets at the core of their misunderstanding of our current economic system.
How Congress Can Fix SCOTUS’s Disastrous Birthplace Citizenship Error
When the Supreme Court decided Trump v. Barbara on June 30, 2026, opponents of birthplace-citizenship reform declared the fight over. But that disappointing decision was not the end of attempts to reform the system. It was merely the “end of the beginning.” Sen. Jim Banks read Barbara as a legislative map. His new Citizenship Act follows the road Wong Kim Ark charted.
Barbara held that President Trump’s executive order was unconstitutional by locking in birthplace citizenship’s definition from a much older case. That 1898 case, United States v. Wong Kim Ark, laid out three categories of people whose children are not automatically citizens even if born on American soil. Barbara held the executive order was unconstitutional for going outside those three categories. But within those three categories, any needed fix need only be by statute. That means Congress can pass a fix.
Banks could have taken the easy way out, either reading Barbara as a loss or arguing any fix must be constitutional — and thus impossible in today’s polarized age. Instead, he took the harder path: legislating within the four corners of precedent. If the Supreme Court says birthplace citizenship is governed by Wong Kim Ark, then Wong Kim Ark’s own exceptions are fair game.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote a separate opinion explaining that while he agreed with the majority’s result, it would not require a constitutional amendment to change the law to deny birthplace citizenship to more people than just the three categories flagged in Wong Kim Ark. This law fits within Kavanaugh’s conception — and may be enough to pull another justice from the majority, too.
