Border Crisis: As COVID broke out, we restricted travel from countries that were most effective to thwart the spread of COVID amongst Americans. The Democrats complained, but eventually accepted the scientific FACT that limiting exposure to infected carriers made sense.

What is Biden’s biggest flaw? Biden simply doesn’t have the judgment to empower America
The bad judgment calls continue to pile up just seven months into the Biden administration. President Joe Biden’s tenure is increasingly characterized by poor personnel choices, ethical lapses, and disastrous policy decisions. Simply put, judgement is Biden’s biggest flaw.
Foreshadowing what would become a pattern, Biden began his presidency by selecting the unpopular former presidential candidate and California Sen. Kamala Harris as his vice president. He followed that with the selection of an eco-terrorist to run the Bureau of Land Management, an anti-gun lobbyist to run Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and an underqualified pro-abortion extremist to run the Department of Health & Human Services.
Following her selection as vice president, Harris proceeded to bail out leftist rioters, undermine public faith in vaccines, and laugh off the border crisis. Then came allegations from anonymous staffers that Harris had a long and consistent history of creating hostile work environments that have traumatized her staff.
More than 1,500 coronavirus-positive migrants released in one week into Texas border town
A border city in south Texas declared a local disaster this week as it struggles to respond to surging cases of the coronavirus among migrants as thousands are released by the Border Patrol onto the street every week.
Last week, a record-high 7,000 migrants were released in downtown McAllen, where they were immediately tested for the coronavirus through a city contractor. More than 1,500 people tested positive over the past seven days, according to a city document issued Wednesday, compared to a total of 7,000 confirmed cases over the past five months. Those who test positive are told to quarantine for two days but are ultimately released into the public.
The city said in a statement that the “shockingly large number of immigrants” released by Customs and Border Protection into the city overwhelmed Catholic Charities, which provides humanitarian services in the city for migrants. “This significant change increases the threat of COVID spread or other lawlessness within the city,” the city said.
The Catholic Charities shelter downtown has taken in migrants released by federal border authorities for seven years but has never seen numbers like those over the past few weeks. In early July, the shelter averaged 750 arrivals daily, increasing to 1,100, and up to 1,900 per day in the first few days of August. The center is only approved to hold 1,236 people at a time.
“Faced with a rapidly escalating surge of immigrants at the Texas-Mexico Border, the City of McAllen’s Emergency Management Office, in coordination with City Management and in accordance with the Mayor’s Declaration of Local Disaster executed on August 2, 2021, took swift action to begin its efforts to mitigate emergent health and safety risks,” the city wrote in a statement issued Wednesday.
9 Things to Know About Senate’s $1.1 Trillion Infrastructure Bill
The Senate unveiled its long-awaited $1.1 trillion infrastructure bill on Monday. In a textbook example of Washington dysfunction, members and the public will only have a few days to review 2,702 pages of programs and provisions before it’s voted on.
Analysts from The Heritage Foundation have found a variety of flaws that should give pause to legislators in both chambers. (The Daily Signal is the news and commentary platform of The Heritage Foundation.)
1. Adds Hundreds of Billions to the National Debt.
With the national debt having increased $5.2 trillion since the start of 2020 (or $40,000 per household) and the economy at risk of serious inflation, America is in dire need of fiscal responsibility from the nation’s leaders. Unfortunately, the Senate bill offers anything but.
For starters, it bails out the Highway Trust Fund to the tune of $118 billion. The fund suffers from chronic deficits due to overspending. Rather than bring it into balance, senators are whipping out the national credit card, and then pretending they didn’t when it comes to keeping score.
2. Fake and Inappropriate ‘Pay-Fors.’
The bill includes many provisions designed to pay for the spending spree, which are dubious, inappropriate, or both.
Senate GOP shifts focus to fight over Biden’s $3.5 trillion budget
Senate Republicans say they are increasingly focusing their fire power in the two-step infrastructure fight on a chaotic budget brawl that will tee up Democrats’ $3.5 trillion spending plan.
Senate Democrats want to pass two things before letting senators leave for their summer break: A roughly $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal and a budget resolution that lets them bypass Republicans later this year on a $3.5 trillion spending plan that includes top Democratic priorities like expanding Medicare, combating climate change and immigration reform.
With Republicans viewing passage of the bipartisan agreement as increasingly inevitable—even as they haggle over potential changes—they say the real fight will be over the budget resolution.
“That’s one that members really want to dig in and fight on,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican.
Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.) has opposed the bipartisan infrastructure deal but called it passing a “fait accompli” and that the fight over the budget was the “main event.”
“I think the real action will be on reconciliation,” he said, referring to the process Democrats are using to pass their budget and spending plan.
Democrats will need total unity as they take two steps to get their $3.5 trillion spending plan through the Senate.
Republicans renew intraparty battle over trillion-dollar spending
Fighting within the Republican Party over a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill is getting intense, and some GOP strategists see it as a defining issue in next year’s primaries.
The internal debate has intensified after an official analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) showing that the legislation will add $256 billion to the federal deficit, despite promises from GOP lawmakers that it would be fully paid for.
The infrastructure bill already had the potential to be a big primary issue given opposition to the measure from former President Trump, who has called senators backing it “RINOs,” or Republicans-in-name-only. The fact that the measure has moved forward anyway has widely been interpreted as a sign GOP senators are tuning Trump out on the issue.
Yet the spending, and the CBO score, could fire up the debate, and has led to sniping over the bill.
One Republican who was taken aback by the disappointing CBO score was Sen. Bill Hagerty (Tenn.), who objected to an attempt by Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to schedule a series of amendments late into the night Thursday to get the bill passed by Friday morning.
Dr. Rand Paul Introduces the Five Penny Plan to Balance the Federal Budget in Five Years
U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) introduced his “Five Penny Plan” federal budget resolution that will balance within five years. Dr. Paul also plans to offer his Five Penny Plan as an amendment to any forthcoming budget resolution that is brought to the Senate floor.
“Four years ago, we could balance our budget with a freeze in spending. Not cut anything. Since then, our debt has sky rocketed to $28 trillion with $3 trillion just from this past year,” said Dr. Paul. “We are now in a situation that a simple penny, two, or even three is insufficient to balance our budget. It requires five. We cannot keep ignoring this problem, this budget sets a goal for balance and provides Congress with necessary tools to achieve that objective.”

Federal judge blocks Texas governor’s get-tough policy to block migrants from leaving border
A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against Texas on Tuesday, blocking Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest get-tough border policy aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from dispersing throughout his state.
Judge Kathleen Cardone, a Bush appointee to the bench, said Texas was interfering with the way the federal government wanted to carry out its immigration policy.
The two-page ruling is a victory for President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, giving them a continued free hand in catching and releasing tens of thousands of illegal immigrants each month.
Mr. Abbott had said he feared the migrants were spurring a COVID surge, and he flexed state powers to order troopers to block any non-law enforcement vehicle believed to be carrying migrants away from the border area.
That would have still allowed Border Patrol and ICE employees to shuttle migrants around, but would have hamstrung the network of contractors and nongovernmental organizations on which Homeland Security is relying to get migrants deeper into the U.S., spreading the COVID risk — and the burden to communities — around further.

For years, American conservatives have taken solace in the First Amendment. While free speech is under relentless attack, the First Amendment and decades of court rulings upholding it offer a robust bulwark against any efforts to categorically restrict speech.
But no longer. Judges from the nation’s cocktail class have erected a legal regime where the First Amendment is interpreted to help Big Tech monopolies suppress the speech of commoners. Meanwhile, in Europe — the land of hate speech laws with no First Amendment — dissidents are battling against tech discrimination with more success than in America…
…For decades, the conservative attitude toward the courts has focused narrowly on guns and abortion. The Trump years highlighted the importance of immigration as well. But because freedom of speech seemed safe, the matter was largely ignored. Now, even many conservative appointees are ideologically beholden to an interpretation of the First Amendment that lets it be used, not to protect the words of the powerless, but to silence them. In the years and decades to come, the courts will now be a key battleground in the realm of speech. Right now, conservative legal thinkers need to formulate legal doctrines that will protect speech rather than suffocate it, and they must elevate judges who will put these doctrines into action.
Make Cuomo Go
New York Attorney General Letitia James has released a damning 165-page report on the multiple women who have come forward — some publicly, some confidentially to investigators — to accuse Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment in the workplace. Eleven women’s stories are examined in detail, and they hang together.
The easy conclusion from reading the report is to say, as many in Cuomo’s own party have said, that Cuomo ought to resign his office. That what we’ve heard from, among others, the president and the senior senator from New York, and it is a good first step. But Cuomo is defiant, which raises the question: What will Democrats do to make him go away?
James’s report was compiled with relentless thoroughness by a team of outside lawyers headed by a veteran federal prosecutor and an experienced sexual-harassment lawyer. The picture painted by the report shows a powerful man who put pervasive pressure on younger women in his orbit: groping their breasts and rear ends, kissing them (sometimes on the mouth), asking about their sex lives and willingness to date an older man, even arranging the transfer of a female state trooper to his protective detail before harassing her. He told the trooper that his criteria for a girlfriend is someone who “can handle pain,” which seems an epic understatement.
New Report: Nearly $300 Billion In Foreign Aid Spent By U.S. Government
The American taxpayer has been generous to foreign countries. Between the years 2013 and 2018, nearly $300 billion in U.S. taxpayer money flowed as “aid” to countries outside the United States.
Each year, the U.S. spent about $47 billion. Half the aid went to Africa and the Middle East in FY2018, the latest year available for these statistics. Interestingly, despite President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda, aid to foreign countries remained virtually unchanged in the first two years of his administration.

China’s crackdown on private enterprise has wiped out more than $1.2 trillion in market value for many powerful Chinese companies and stoked fears about the future of innovation in the world’s second largest economy.
But the end goal of Beijing’s aggressive bid for control isn’t about creating chaos. The government wants to make clear to its corporate champions that tapping capitalist markets is fine — as long as it is on the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s terms.
The heavy selling has accelerated in recent months as Chinese authorities slap companies with fines, ban apps from stores and demand that some firms completely overhaul their businesses.
Hundreds of billions of dollars in market value has been erased in the last week alone, after regulators announced curbs on China’s for-profit education industry and its food delivery sector.
The way Beijing sees it, the efforts to rein in private enterprise are meant to protect the economy and the country’s citizens from instability. They’re also intended to fix longstanding concerns around overwork, data privacy and inequality in education.
“Ultimately, Beijing’s crackdown on private business is about control,” said Alex Capri, a research fellow at the Hinrich Foundation. “The main priority is about preventing behavior amongst private companies that could engender more independent and potentially non-conformist activities, which undermines Beijing’s state-centric model.”
1619 Project, Touted as Racial Reckoning, Ignores Democratic Party Racism
Democrats who advanced a bill in June to remove statues of white supremacists from the U.S. Capitol ignored a central fact about those figures: All of them had been icons of their party, from Andrew Jackson’s adamantly pro-slavery vice president, John C. Calhoun, to North Carolina Gov. Charles B. Aycock, an architect of the white-supremacist campaign of 1898 that ushered in the era of Jim Crow.
At a time when governments, sports teams, schools and other bastions of American society are rushing to expunge legacies of slavery or racism, this was another instance of the Democratic Party’s failure to acknowledge that it did more than any other institution in American life to preserve the “peculiar institution” — and later enforce Jim Crow-style apartheid in the Old South.
“I think it’s absolutely fair to criticize the history of the Democrat Party when we’re literally changing the names of birds because they’re named after racists,” said Jarrett Stepman, author of “The War on History: The Conspiracy to Rewrite America’s Past,” referring to a new racism-cleansing push in, yes, ornithology.
Democrats’ circumspection in the face of this trend is especially noteworthy because it comes at a time when they are criticizing Republican legislation to block the teaching of critical race theory on the ground that the GOP wants to whitewash American history. But one of the most noteworthy efforts to reframe American history in terms of race, the New York Times’ 1619 Project, virtually ignores the Democrat Party’s role in advancing and sustaining racism in the United States.
Named after the year slaves from Africa were first brought to North America, the curated collection of essays on race in America presents even the most complex modern issues – from obesity and traffic jams to capitalism itself – as being primarily a consequence of America’s history of slavery and racial injustice. The 1619 Project has been widely adopted as an historical framework on the left despite criticism from eminent historians, being repudiated by the 1619 Project’s own fact-checkers, and mangling basic facts.
Unearthed Paper Shows Biden-Linked Group Demanding ‘Robust’ Audits & Admitting Machines Are Hackable Even Without Internet Access
The 21-page document entitled “9 Solutions to Secure America’s Elections” was written by Danielle Root and Liz Kennedy and published on August 16, 2017.
At the time, the political left was attempting to convince Americans that Donald Trump was an illegitimate president, and that Russian election interference had swayed the 2016 election process. To this day, losing candidate Hillary Clinton insists the election was “stolen” from her.
Fast forward four years, and the corporate media alongside Democrats scream in one voice that election audits are not necessary, and are in fact an “attack” on “democracy.”
But their 2017 sentiments beg to differ.
The Machines.
“The legitimacy of self-government rests on the consent of the governed. In our democratic republic, that consent is manifested through the administration of free and fair elections,” the report begins, before going on the hash out many of the debunked Russian-collusion conspiracy theories that dominated the Trump presidency.
But the report goes on to assert a number of things that, now asserted by the Trump Right, are called “dangerous disinformation.”
The first point concerns voting machines such as those deployed by Dominion Voting Systems, specifically addressing the current corporate media canard about the machines not being connected to the internet.
Hungary: An Overweighted Symbol
Into a void of ignorance about the country, liberals and conservatives project frightening or hopeful things.
So Tucker Carlson is in Hungary this week. He had a brief meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and he seems to be using the August lull in the news cycle to teach his audience about Orbán’s form of politics, which are conservative, nationalist, and activist. Orbán’s party talks about preserving Hungary’s Christian character, it opposed mass migration into Hungary in the middle of the last decade, and it has tried dramatic experiments in state inducements to childbirth.
The occasion of Carlson’s presence there is one that will be used by liberals and some conservatives to say a lot of insane things about Hungary…
…Orbán is a canny politician. He used to run right through the middle of his opposition — socialists on one side, fascists on the other. Now that opposition has united in an unstable but formidable anti-Fidesz coalition. I would expect Orbán to try to split it by highlighting the cultural issues that divide such a coalition.
But it also could be that these Central European nations have a very specific history and position in the world that allowed populist nationalism to come to power. And, as they fail to achieve their highest ambitions and succeed in imposing unexpected costs on the public, democratic peoples will tire of them and throw them out. I think we may be nearer to that day than most people currently imagine.
I am rooting for the survival of these societies and the states that guard them. But I can’t yet see how it will work, and I’m still searching for a reason for optimism.
