Republicans bet the House on Trump
GOP leaders are betting the House on President Trump in this year’s elections.
The midterm cycle is always a referendum on the sitting president, whether members of his party like it or not. And if there was a clear message from the Republicans’ midterm convention in Dallas, it’s that GOP leaders have embraced that reality with zeal, leaning heavily on Trump to animate their base and stave off a blue wave.
“Show up and vote Republican up and down the ballot,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) urged the crowd in Texas. “President Trump’s America First agenda is at stake.”
Yet the perils of that approach are equally as clear, as many vulnerable Republicans are seeking to distance themselves from a president whose national approval rating has sunk to historic lows. Most of those battleground lawmakers skipped the Dallas rally, where Trump was the ubiquitous star attraction.
As Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and his leadership team return to Washington this week on the heels of the unconventional convention, they’ll be reminded at every turn of the risks underlying their lean-in strategy.
The very real scenario where the GOP expands its Senate majority
The New York Times ran a splashy story this week with its experts predicting the outcome of the midterm elections. Overall, “it’s looking bullish for Democrats,” the alleged paper of record reported, with not one of these experts giving the GOP an outright majority in the upper chamber.
It’s increasingly difficult to trust pollsters these days, given their track record. Nate Silver, for example, is one of these five experts the New York Times offers up in the piece. He’s the same guy who gave Hillary Clinton about a 75% chance of winning the 2016 presidential race. He also predicted Kamala Harris would top Donald Trump in both the popular vote and the Electoral College in 2024.
Ten years ago, the New York Times forecast on the morning of the presidential election gave Clinton an 85% chance of winning, including Trump having just a 6% chance of winning Michigan, an 11% chance in Pennsylvania, and a 33% in Florida. Trump won all three.
In 2024, it provided ample space to the overhyped Allan Lichtman and James Carville in its op-ed pages, with both men guaranteeing victory for Harris. And the New York Times’s editorial board did what it has always done every four years since 1956: endorse the Democratic candidate.
In this week’s prediction piece, the New York Times’s experts have Democrats easily winning back the House, while two analysts see a 50-50 Senate and three see an outright majority of up to 52 seats.
But with the current unpopularity of the Democratic Party, which is experiencing a civil war between its establishment and socialist wings, and the fact that Democrats will need to win in states they haven’t won in years, these predictions seem more based on hope than logic.

Rick Scott launches ‘Rescuing America’ economic messaging plan
The Florida Republican, who is viewed as having 2028 ambitions, is also expected to travel the country to speak at economic events.
Sen. Rick Scott is launching a plan for how the country should tackle its growing economic headaches as Republicans face rising voter affordability concerns heading into the midterms.
The Florida Republican, who has garnered 2028 White House speculation, will announce the “Rescuing America” project in a video to be published Tuesday, according to details first shared with POLITICO.
“I put together a project with one goal — to educate the American public on how our economy has drastically changed, how the American dream is out of reach for so many, and how we can fix it,” Scott says in the video.
Scott’s plan comes as the party is facing a wave of voter frustration about the economy — a dynamic he appeared to acknowledge in the video.
“The question is not whether people are angry — they are,” he says. “The question is who provides the answers.”
Explosive Judiciary Committee Report Accuses ActBlue of Major Fraudulent Donation Cover-Up
The House Judiciary Committee, along with the House Administration Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released an interim staff report on ActBlue, the Democratic fundraising platform.
In that report, the Committees found that ActBlue failed to prevent illegal foreign political contributions, and it’s being called an “explosive” insight into the organization’s practices.
Two years ago, the Committees began investigating ActBlue’s fraud-prevention practices. In 2024, ActBlue changed its fraud policy twice during the presidential campaign, reportedly implementing “more lenient” standards that let foreign donors and other suspicious donor money flow into U.S. campaigns.
Earlier this year, The New York Times reported that the organization’s lawyers warned that its chief executive had given potentially misleading responses to Republican investigators. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a suit against the organization over its allowing foreign donations and lying about its donation practices.
Ted Cruz doesn’t see a clear GOP presidential successor in 2028: ‘No Donald Trump on the horizon’
The GOP doesn’t have another Donald Trump in its ranks and there will be a “fundamental debate” over the future of the party in the run-up to the 2028 presidential election, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said on the latest episode of “Pod Force One.”
Cruz, who ran for president in 2016 and admits he still has White House ambitions, told host Miranda Devine that he expects a competitive and full-fledged primary process to determine the best Republican to succeed President Trump.
“I think we are going to have a full and vigorous primary and discussion,” the Texas Republican said, when asked about the possibility of Vice President JD Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio being anointed to take the mantle from Trump.
“I think the voters are going to decide who are we and what do we believe, and that matters,” Cruz continued. “And President Trump is a unique historical figure. I’m going to say right now, there is no Donald Trump on the horizon to succeed [him].”
The socialist takeover: This is not your parents’ Democratic Party
For years, Republicans warned that the Democratic Party’s activist left was moving toward socialism. In 2026, the debate is no longer mainly about labels: Democratic-socialist candidates are winning nominations, while the Democratic Socialists of America is publishing, in unusually candid language, the anti-American political and economic system it wants to create.
In a recent vote in Congress, there was a resolution denouncing socialism in America, but 192 Democrats voted to support socialism. Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said it is “the end goal of seizing the means of production.” Democrat Cea Weaver wrote that government has a “sacred right to seize private property” and “impoverish the white middle class.” Other Democrats like Francesca Hong have said that they want to not only defund the police, but they want to have a world without prisons — making violent crime dramatically expand.
In Michigan, Abdul el Sayed is the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate. In Texas, James Talarico is the Democratic Senate nominee. In Maine, Troy Jackson is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins. All three are campaigning for Medicare for All, much higher taxes on the wealthy and corporations, the dismantling and abolition of ICE, and opening our borders.
Will Democrats Reject ‘Free Money’ for Schools?
A potentially sweeping reform to K-12 education beginning in January is forcing Democratic governors to weigh the political risks of joining or rejecting the new federal school choice program designed by conservatives.
The little-known program, called the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit, creates a new and possibly large funding stream for education based on private donations to nonprofit scholarship granting organizations. The uncapped initiative is expected to generate billions of dollars in scholarships that could affect the educational paths and performance of millions of students in both public and private schools.
Jim Blew, who helped design the tax credit, calls it “the most important federal educational reform in decades.”
“It’s probably the most important federal educational reform in decades because once it’s fully implemented, 90% of students will be eligible for educational scholarships,” said Jim Blew, a program architect and advisor to the national coalition advocating for it.
The appeal to Democratic governors, who have until Jan. 1 to opt into the program for 2027, is clear: The new funding could pay for tutoring and other educational services to help reverse the steady decline in the academic performance particularly of disadvantaged public school students. The political risks are also clear: Governors would face blowback from their own base – teachers unions and civil rights and progressive groups. They oppose the initiative because it will pull students from public schools by funding their tuition to attend private and religious institutions.
The revelations pose major questions for Russia, China and the Trump administration.
Now is the wrong time for the Pentagon to pull back from Europe
The Hudson Institute’s Daniel Kochis argues in this op-ed that Russia must remain convinced that America’s presence, combined with European NATO members’ firepower, is enough not to risk a direct confrontation.
Since the start of 2026, two key pillars buttressing NATO deterrence have taken a hit. The first is the ongoing rapid and deep deterioration of US munitions stockpiles resulting from the war with Iran, and the second is the May announcement of immediate and substantial limitations on US contributions to NATO’s Force Model in the event of a future conflict.
Now, the Pentagon has launched a European force posture review. The Secretary of War will be briefed on a few sets of options for the size and distribution of US forces in Europe in early November, with the process ending in early December. President Donald Trump will then make the ultimate decision on accepting, amending or rejecting the department’s recommendation, no doubt with input from the National Security Council and State Department.
Periodically undertaking a clear-eyed review of America’s commitments in Europe is a prudent exercise. But considering the Kremlin’s increasingly active kinetic campaign against Europe, and a European rearmament that has not gained full steam, an honest review should conclude that the US must retain a robust force posture in Europe.
The reality is that there is little excess left to cut from the US presence in Europe without affecting capabilities. The 80,000 combined rotational and permanent troops currently deployed there are well below the average permanent American presence in Europe of approximately 94,000 since the Cold War ended.

The House’s September 16 passage of the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 is a bipartisan victory for Ukraine and, if signed and implemented, for the United States. The bill passed the Senate on August 7 and, barring procedural hurdles, should now head to President Donald J. Trump’s desk for signature. From there, it gets complicated: Will the administration use it as its sponsors intended, to pressure the Kremlin to end its war against Ukraine? In that case, it could provide muscle to the spotty US negotiating efforts to end the war and be a fitting tribute to the late senator whose name the legislation bears. Or will the fears of some of the bill’s opponents—that the administration will not implement it in good faith but either stall or subvert its intent—be realized?
The bill’s most powerful and controversial provision is Section 113, which would impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on countries that import large amounts of Russian crude oil or natural gas or are major facilitators of sanctions evasion. That list certainly includes China and India, but it may also include US allies such as Turkey and Japan, as well as European Union allies such as Slovakia and Hungary. Critics maintain that tariffs are a poor tool in general for putting pressure on Russia or third countries. They have a point, especially given the often ineffective, even clumsy way the administration has handled tariffs to date. Critics specifically argue that Section 113 gives the administration broad authority that it could abuse, for example by imposing tariffs on the entire EU because of oil and gas purchases by some member states.
These aren’t empty objections. Implementation will be tricky. But the act includes flexibility that could help it work. Section 113(b) allows tariff rates to be adjusted if a country reduces or ends its imports of Russian oil or gas. That would give the United States flexibility to work with countries that agree to reduce those purchases. EU decisions already require member states to eliminate purchases of Russian oil and gas by the end of 2027. The United States could make similar arrangements with importers of Russian oil and gas, even India and China, to lower their purchases over time—a “ramp down” process that the United States used in the past to reduce Chinese and Indian purchases of Iranian oil. Section 113(c) also limits the tariffs to the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, so the list of targeted countries is not large in any case.

New blood-based biomarkers can help identify Alzheimer’s before clinical dementia develops, while emerging treatments may slow its progression. For Dr. Brent Beasley, a physician diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at just 57, early detection and treatment became deeply personal. After cognitive decline cost him his medical career, a blood biomarker test helped lead to his diagnosis and treatment. Today, he describes a future for Alzheimer’s patients filled with far more possibility than existed even a decade ago.
Former CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield believes this scientific progress demands an equally significant change in public policy. Drawing on lessons from the fight against HIV/AIDS, he argues that America must move from waiting for symptoms to routinely identifying Alzheimer’s earlier, expanding access to available treatments, and accelerating the development of new therapies. With millions of Americans already living with the disease and millions more family members affected as caregivers, the question is no longer simply whether science can change the trajectory of Alzheimer’s. It is whether Congress, CMS, and the health care system can move quickly enough to take advantage of the breakthroughs already underway.
