Jim Martin: “Mr. President, now is the time to demonstrate to the American people that you did indeed listen to what they had to say Election Day and work with the leaders who were hired to lead Congress.”
(Alexandria, VA) – 60 Plus Chairman Jim Martin, leader of the nation’s largest center-right seniors group with over 7.2 million elderly supporters, offered his endorsement to the priorities outlined by Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) in a post-election press conference Thursday.
Boehner stated that along with the incoming GOP Senate majority and presumed leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), their focus would be job creation and to fix the most harmful and unpopular components of Obamacare, such as eliminating both the medical devices tax and the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) that empowers unelected bureaucrats to make deep cuts in Medicare reimbursements. Boehner further stated both chambers would continue to push to repeal and replace Obamacare, the White House’s signature piece of legislation that galvanized voters and swept Republicans to huge gains in Washington.
Said Martin, “Speaker Boehner spoke today, and I’ll tell you that when he did, millions of seniors instantly felt better. We know that the new leadership in Washington can’t fix everything overnight, or perhaps even make much headway with the President, but at least we now have someone fighting for us back in the seat of power.
“The Speaker set the right tone and made the exact right statements regarding following the will of the people, who don’t want Obamacare and want it replaced with something that helps control costs and empowers patients and physicians. The medical devices tax should be first on the chopping block, followed by IPAB. We know that many Democrat lawmakers lost their jobs on Tuesday, but let’s hope that whoever came up with the idea of taxing wheelchairs and giving unelected bureaucrats total control over Medicare got a pink slip as well.
“Seniors thank Speaker Boehner and his soon-to-be partner Senator Mitch McConnell in setting a new agenda and new tone in Washington. For seniors, it makes a big difference to know leaders are fighting for us and not against us.”
