Opposition Growing to the Puerto Rico Bailout

This has not been a good few days for the pro-bailout, debt-avoidance crowd in San Juan.

Just this week, a leading conservative Republican politician from Puerto Rico broke ranks with those Puerto Ricans working to advance the $164 billion bailout bill in Washington: In Puerto Rico where I grew up we learned to keep our promises and pay our debts,” writes Jennifer Gonzalez, vice chairperson of the New Progressive Party (PNP), in The Hill newspaper. Ms. Gonzalez continues, “If we were to take the easy way out and declare bankruptcy, the way forward would not be so easy. Investors would hesitate, understandably, before buying our debt in the future and we would have to pay much higher interest rates to attract funding.”

Seniors Group Stands Behind Dumping the Doc Fix

(Alexandria, Virginia) — The 60 Plus Association, America’s largest center-right seniors group with over 7.2 million supporters, today endorsed bi-partisan congressional legislation introduced this week to reform and strengthen Medicare by eliminating the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) and accompanying “doc fix”. The SGR has triggered deep cuts to physician reimbursements since its enactment nearly 20 years ago, with 17 congressional doc fixes reinstating much of the funding. This proposed reform would end the SGR and restructure Medicare payments, thus ending the need for the doc fix.

Florida Bill Would Protect Seniors from EPA Overreach

(Alexandria, Virginia) – The 60 Plus Association, a nonpartisan senior’s advocacy group with more than 800,000 senior supporters in Florida, called on the Florida House Energy and Utilities Subcommittee today to approve and advance House Bill 849, which has bipartisan support and is sponsored by Florida State Representative John Wood (R-41).  The bill is expected to be heard in committee on Thursday, March 12th.
