Coalition Calls on Congress to Stabilize Commodity and Food Prices

60 Plus Leads Charge for Free-Market Reforms to Global Sugar Trade

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (November 16, 2017) – 60 Plus, the nation’s largest conservative group representing the interests of seniors, today asked Member of Congress to support legislation that would stabilize food prices by bringing free market principals to the global trade of sugar.

In correspondence to all U.S. Representatives, 60 Plus was joined by other free-market groups in a coalition asking Congress to support H. Con. Res. 40, authored by Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL). Otherwise known as The Zero-for-Zero plan, the bill would shift support for farmers based on global trading partners following the lead of the United States.

“Rep. Yoho’s bill brings true, free market reforms to the market by phasing out government interference around the world,” said 60 Plus Founder and Chairman Jim Martin. “Zero-for-Zero would better protect American farmers from market volatility and protect American consumers by bringing price stability for food. This is extremely important for American seniors, many of whom are living on fixed incomes that cannot easily afford spikes in food prices.”

Other organizations included in the coalition include:

Americans for Limited Government

Consumer Action for a Stronger Economy

Citizen Outreach

The Hispanic Leadership Fund

The Institute for Liberty

The Institute for Policy Innovation

Less Government

“Sugar is one of the most used commodities in making other kinds of food, which is why we’re so focused on bringing fairer practices to the global trade of this key foodstuff,” said Martin. Yoho’s bill would change U.S. trade policy on sugar to limit or eliminate subsidies to farmers not just in the United States but in other sugar producing nations.”
